We have just published our violin and cello duet arrangement of Alleluia from Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate. Is this the happiest music in the world? Maybe!  Mozart wrote it when he was only 17. Here’s the original orchestration:

Our new arrangement of Tambourin by the revolutionary Gossec

By | sheet music sales

The latest string duet arrangement we are selling is Tambourin by Francois Joseph Gossec. Gossec was born in 1734 and became the favourite composer of Revolutionary France. Today he is most famous for Tambourin – a delightful piece which lifts the spirit, as you can hear in this vibrant flute and harp arrangement:

Our arrangement is fun to play
Tambourin  works brilliantly for violin and cello duet – you can buy the music by clicking here:

The link to the French Revolution
Who would ever guess that such a relaxed tune was written during the French Revolution or that Gossec’s compositions were loved by Robespierre?

Our new string duet arrangement of Bach’s most famous work

By | sheet music sales

We have just published our violin and cello duet arrangement of Air on a G String – perhaps Bach’s most famous work.
Creating this arrangement
This piece has been a challenge to arrange for string duet. Roger and I both tried writing versions but neither felt quite right, so we abandoned the idea. However, the problems somehow resolved themselves and Roger created the arrangement we are selling now which is beautifully balanced and calm. Click here to buy it on our Music Sales’ page…

Playing string orchestra music by heart

By | sheet music sales

The link below shows a marvellous performance of the waltz movement of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings by a chamber ensemble called A Far Cry.

This performance brings the dance character to life wonderfully well  and the group are playing by heart, which can give  an added sense of freedom as long as you are experienced enough to feel confident.  A Far Cry clearly is, and the results speak for themselves.

Great Cello Duets to Explore
Duets are a wonderfully enjoyable form of chamber music and cellist Mark Bailey and I recently recorded a cello duet which had been written by our former teacher Christopher Bunting and is based on the Bourees from Bach’s 3rd cello suite and has some tricky string crossing,  lots of character and definite sense of humour. Listen below:

Other wonderul cello duets  include Handel’s Cello Duet in G minor  and Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto – also in G minor.

We are now selling ten cello duet arrangements of  well known music on our website  – and if you browse through our online shop you’ll see that if you buy five of our arrangements we will give you one arrangement free.

Buy Jerome Kern’s String Duets Here!

By | sheet music sales

Jerome Kern’s music is now out of copyright and today we have added five violin and cello duet arrangements of his music to our website.Love, in its many moods, is the theme for all but one of these songs; the exception is Pick Yourself Up – a delightful, confidence-boosting piece of positive thinking.YOu can buy the music at our shop by clicking here:

Why this is a dream to play
From a string player’s point of view Kern’s music has great fluidity of line which makes it easy to phrase, and it also has a joyful sense of abandon which is ideal for romance. Jerome Kern himself, however, was very down to earth and declared himself nothing more than a “ musical clothier – I write music for the lyrics and situations in plays.”  Luckily for us  his classical training, craftsmanship and empathy for mood have ensured his music sounds as spontaneous and effortless today as it did 100 years ago.

Our latest famous string duet arrangement – Una Furtiva Lagrima

By | sheet music sales

Our sheet music string duo arrangement of Una Furtiva Lagrima ( A Furtive Tear) is now available. This hauntingly beautiful tune is the most famous aria from Donizetti’s opera L’Elisir D’Amore  ( The Love Potion) and it seems incongrous that it comes from a comic opera as it  completely transcends its context.
The plot of the opera
L’Elisir D’Amore tells the story of a village boy called Nemorino who falls in love with  Adina. To win her affection he buys a ‘love potion’ from a visiting quack doctor – not realising that it only contains wine.
About our arrangement
In our arrangement the cello has the tune for a great deal of the time – reflecting the fact that it is a tenor aria. You can buy our duet of the aria here:

Freedom!

By | sheet music sales

For quite a long time I have been incorporating improvisation into my cello teaching – occasionally with almost miraculous results; but I had no idea where to begin when it came to improvising on the piano. A lesson with Lucinda Mackworth Young was a huge help: she showed me how simple piano improvisation can be and came up with many easy but effective ideas that have transformed my teaching and given me a strong basis to develop my own improvisatory approach .

A sense of freedom
Why is improvising such a good thing? It gives you freedom ( I always have an image of Mel Gibson in Braveheart when I say that word ).The classical music world is focused on perfection, and frankly it is so hard to play an instrument to the highest level that the effort involved can create a sense of inhibition and stress. While it’s true that there’s no substitute for regular hard work, it’s sad if this means you cannot look at your instrument without a feeling of joy in your heart.

How easy is it?
As with anything, the more you practise improvising the better you get. I also think that the more you are aware of how composers put things together – of the chords, modulations and intervals and how they affect your feelings – the more sensitive an ear you develop and the more you can ‘own’ your interpretation in performance.

Improvising helps with composition
Roger and I have often used improvisatory ideas in our violin and cello duets and we know from experience how this can suddenly bring a sheet music arrangement to life. Oh for the days of baroque music where pupils were taught to improvise from the very beginning and expected to do so live in performance.Lucinda Mackworth Young’s book – Piano by Ear – has just come out and is invaluable. It costs £12.99 and is available from Faber Music or Amazon.

New Sheet Music Arrangements!

By | buy music, fedora strings, fedora strings performance, sheet music, string teaching | No Comments

We have just published nine more of our violin and cello duet sheet music arrangements – a mixture of folk and classical: Lilliburlero, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, Londonderry Air, My Love is like a Red,Red Rose, Dance To Your Daddy, Over the Hills and Far Away, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bizet’s Habanera and Toreador Song. All the arrangements are medium to difficult in standard and have lots of interesting string effects. We will be recording these sheet music arrangements in May and will add the recordings to our website  then, but we wanted to make the music available for sale right away as the string duo repertoire is quite limited.

Opera Carmen di Bizet (1)

A scene from Bizet’s Carmen

We perform the sheet music we are selling frequently so we know these arrangements work well;  the cello usually has quite a few of the tunes and the balance between the parts has been thought through carefully with character  one of our main focuses. We hope string players will love playing this music.

Fedora Strings' Sheet Music Arrangements Are Now For Sale!

By | fedora strings, fedora strings performance, string teaching, tour dates | No Comments

You can now buy sheet music  of our string duo pieces: last week we launched a page on our website where four of our arrangements can be purchased. We decided to start by selling our versions of four of the works  we have made videos of –  Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Summertime, La Cumparsita and Minuet and Trio –  and we hope to continue to add to the selection over the next few months.

As almost all the duo music we play is of our own arrangements we now have a  large repertoire, but it takes a surprising amount of time to translate these versions into completely accurate printed editions where everything has to be perfect. We tend to make so many changes as we rehearse that our own copies are full of changes and sometimes partly improvised.

The standard of the music is medium to difficult and you can hear all the arrangements  we are selling  by clicking on our  videos.
